Renita Coursey, The Nanticoke Native

The universe has a magical way of connecting paths, and I recently experienced this firsthand during a recent photoshoot with the talented Renita Coursey. As a 2025 DDOA Individual Artist Fellow and grant recipient for folk art, Renita's artistry is a beautiful intersection of her Nanticoke ancestry and contemporary expression.

Join me as I share the inspiring journey behind our branding session, filled with creativity, spirit, and serendipity!

A Perfect Setting: The Wilmington Riverfront

Despite the frigid cold, relentless wind, and muddy conditions, the Wilmington Riverfront provided the ideal backdrop for our session. The location, where the marshland meets the city, embodies the essence of Renita's work and ancestry. The natural and urban elements complemented Renita's vibe and artistry, making it a truly magical experience.

Connection & Collaboration

Renita and I began our journey with a brief phone conversation, where she expressed her need for updated branding images for her website, socials, and grant applications. To ensure we were aligned creatively, I sent out a questionnaire to give me insight into her artistic philosophy and vision. This initial dialogue was essential in aligning our visions, and enabled us to create images that truly reflect her essence as an artist. This collaboration is where the real magic happens, and I believe it shines through in her stunning gallery.

Celebrating Indigenous Artistry

Renita’s artwork is deeply rooted in her Nanticoke ancestry, showcasing indigenous handcrafted art and fashion. It was an enlightening experience to learn about the  Nanticoke Indian Tribe , and I felt it was long overdue (and timely!!!) to dive deeper into and celebrate the rich history and culture of the Original Americans. Renita's work is a beautiful testament to her heritage, bridging the gap between Native tradition and modern streetwear. Do not miss the chance to explore her exquisite creations—follow her on Instagram @thenanticokenative.

Shoutout to NTVS!

I also want to give a shout-out to NTVS! Renita wore the turquoise pullover jacket in several of her images, which helped to set off the fusion of her traditional and contemporary style. This not only showcases the vibrancy of indigenous fashion, but the importance of supporting artists who honor their roots while pushing creative boundaries.

Conclusion

It’s moments like these that remind me of the power of art and connection. Capturing the essence of Renita Coursey was not just about taking photos; it was about storytelling, celebrating heritage, and embracing creativity in its many forms. If you’re looking for inspiration or seeking to support indigenous artists, dive into Renita’s world and witness the beauty that unfolds when tradition meets innovation @thenanticokenative.

Testimonial

"From the beginning of my experience with Jen, which started with a friendly email to set up a call in order to talk about what sort of photos I was needing, I felt so comfortable. She took the time to ask questions specific to my art and brand, researched things in her spare time and was even so kind as to bring a variety of props for our shoot together. We shot on a cold, windy day and Jen showed up on time with hand warmers for each of us. How sweet!! Beyond that, her good natured spirit and quirky sense of humor was just the energy I was needing to be around if I was going to brave getting in front of a camera for the first time in four years. Jen was just absolutely awesome. A lovely person and pretty awesome photographer. I can't wait to work with her again!"

THANK YOU, RENITA!
