5 Tips for an Enjoyable and Stress-Free Family Photo Session with Young Kids

Many families hesitate to schedule a family photo session due to the challenges of having young children. Let’s be honest: it can be quite stressful! However, family photos are a wonderful way to capture your family's journey over the years. The effort put into getting professional photos taken is definitely worthwhile.

Here are some tips to make your session enjoyable for your little ones while minimizing stress!

1 – Set Expectations Before the Session, but Keep Them Realistic

Before your photo session, chat with your kids about what to expect and the fun they will have. Tell them they are going to meet your friend who is a photographer. It's important to set some basic guidelines on behavior, but don't put too much pressure on them to perform perfectly. If you're worried they might not listen, our next tip will help!

2 – Plan a Reward After the Photo Session

Create excitement by planning a special treat after your family photo session, like ice cream or a movie night after the session. Knowing there's a reward can encourage your kids to cooperate during the shoot. Plus, it makes the entire experience more enjoyable—who doesn’t love a little incentive?

3 – Ensure Your Kids are Well-Rested and Full

This is crucial! Aim to schedule your session after nap time or when your child is typically in a good mood. Make sure they have a healthy snack beforehand to keep them content. Some parents even bring snacks along during the session to keep kids engaged. Remember, a full and rested child is less likely to have big feelings or become cranky!

4 – Bring a Change of Clothes

Having a spare set of clothes is essential. We know that messes can happen at the most inconvenient times—blowouts, spills, and more! Being prepared can help ensure your photo session goes off without a hitch. Arriving a bit early can also help!

5 – Allow Your Kids to Be Themselves

My best tip! The beauty of a family session is that you get to be in the photos too. If things aren’t going as planned, embrace the moment and let your kids be themselves. Explore, play, share laughter, and dance around! I love capturing those candid moments that truly reflect the joy of your family and the stage of life you’re in. Ultimately, the goal is to create lasting memories of your authentic moments.
